DRUNKARDS : BIOGRAFIA
Nata nel gennaio 1985, la band mantiene invariata la formazione fino all’inverno del 1990: GIANCARLO “Jun” CARMINATI (voce e chitarra) - MARCO VETTURI (chitarra) - GERMANO MINUTI (basso) e ANDREA VETTURI (batteria).
Nel 1985, dopo una serie di concerti in ambito locale, viene pubblicato l’omonimo demotape d’esordio. La tracking list comprende: MARCH TO FIGHT (intro), BLOODY BONES, DON’T YOU PLAY WITH THE POWERS OF HELL, FINAL REVENGE, LOST AND LONELY, 5 MINUTES OF LIFE e AND THE DEWS OF NIGHT ARISE (strumentale - solo piano).
Il gruppo partecipa alle selezioni del concorso “SIM - Viva i giovani” svoltosi a Milano dal 5 al 9 settembre 1985, organizzato c/o il 19° Salone Internazionale della Musica e High Fidelity, approdando alla finale (tra i 20 gruppi finalisti troviamo anche le LIPSTICK) svoltasi l’11 novembre 1985 al Teatro Manzoni di Milano, ripresa e trasmessa da Rai 3 e recensita dal quotidiano nazionale “Il Corriere della Sera” (14/11/1985).
L’anno 1986 vede il gruppo impegnato in un’intensa attività live. Tra i concerti più importanti si segnala la partecipazione del 01/03/1986 al festival “Dangerous meeting” di Pantigliate (MI) insieme a EXTREMA, MOON OF STEEL, EVIL FORCE, HELL KNIGHT e WITNESS e il 22/09/1986 al festival “Heavy Metal Night” di Sorisole (BG) insieme a R.A.F. (ROYAL AIR FORCE), SKANNERS e TOUCH OF DEVIL.
Nel dicembre ’86 la band ritorna in studio per registrare il secondo demo “LETHAL TO WEAK ONES” che si compone dei seguenti brani: CAPTIVE OF MY VICE, DON’T YOU PLAY WITH THE POWERS OF HELL, PIRANA (strumentale), LOST AND LONELY, TROOPER OF DEATH, BLOODY BONES, METAL FURY BROKE FREE, BRAINLESS e FINAL REVENGE. Il nastro riscuote buoni consensi e arriva tra le mani del discografico LUIGI MAZZESI, titolare della storica etichetta LM RECORDS (per la quale hanno inciso tra gli altri STRANA OFFICINA, MORGANA, SABOTAGE, CRYING STEEL, REX INFERI, FLIGHT CHARM ecc.).
Nel dicembre 1987 il gruppo sigla un contratto con la LM Records per la partecipazione alla compilation “HEAVY RENDEZ-VOUS” (insieme a NAPALM, ADRAMELCH, MOON OF STEEL, CREEPIN’ DEATH, MASTERSTROKE, M.A.C.E. e BLACKBURN) con il brano “TROOPER OF DEATH” che per l’occasione viene re inciso a Firenze c/o il “Much More Music Studio” di BERNARDO BALDASSARRI e ANDREA CORSELLINI (attuale fonico live di Vasco Rossi e altri importanti artisti Nazionali).
Successivamente la band torna al Much More Music Studio di Firenze per registrare altri 5 nuovi brani (LOOKING FOR TROUBLES, OBSESSION, HUMAN VIVISECTION, NUCLEAR SOLUTION e CAPTIVE OF MY VICE), ed è intenzionata a pubblicare un mini L.P. Nel frattempo viene sottoscritto un contratto con la Musical Box Promotion di Klaus Byron per la promozione dell’advance tape su scala nazionale, ottenendo confortanti riscontri dalle emittenti radio e magazines specializzati. La LM RECORDS propone la pubblicazione di un intero Long Playing. Viene siglato l’accordo e la band torna in sala d’incisione per la realizzazione di altri due brani: LOST AND LONELY (in versione acustica) e la nuova DON’T SEARCH FOR THE ANSWER.
Il 1988 vede la pubblicazione da parte dell’etichetta LM RECORDS della compilation “HEAVY RENDEZ-VOUS” e dell’omonimo album d’esordio. Entrambi i lavori ottengono riscontri positivi da parte della stampa specializzata (le riviste di settore H.M., Metal Shock e altre fanzines) e degli addetti ai lavori.
L’attività live riprende con una serie di date in tutta Italia (allo storico locale “Sorpasso” di Milano, come special guests nella data del tour degli SKANNERS a Imola, due date a Torino alla Birreria Pozzo del Diavolo, al locale “Topsy” di Livorno, “Pussycat” di Viserbella ecc. ecc.).
Nel frattempo il gruppo lavora alla composizione dei brani del secondo album e nell’estate del 1989 entra di nuovo in sala d’incisione (Koala Studio di Senigallia – Ancona) portandosi al seguito il tecnico del suono BERNARDO BALDASSARRI (ex chitarrista dei MASTERSTROKE), oramai considerato il quinto elemento della band. Le registrazioni vengono ultimate nell’autunno dello stesso anno e il lavoro si compone dei seguenti brani: 44151, SAY GOODBYE, GONNA DO IT MY WAY, UMMO WEH DINNAH (solo voci), DISARRAY, A WOMAN LIKE YOU, OBSESSION (Part II), THE ABSURD TALE OF GOD, TONIGHT. L’album rappresenta un netto passo avanti rispetto al precedente disco sia per quanto riguarda la produzione che per l’impatto del suono, avendo potuto usufruire di uno studio di registrazione all’avanguardia. Così come è avvenuto per il primo album omonimo, le composizioni spaziano molto e risentono principalmente delle influenze dei METALLICA, ANTHRAX, SLAYER, EXODUS, MEGADETH, MERCYFUL FATE e BLACK SABBATH.
Sfortunatamente, a causa di una serie di problemi estranei e indipendenti dalla band, la pubblicazione dell’album “NO TRACE OF SANITY” subisce forti ritardi e la delusione per la mancata pubblicazione porta allo scioglimento definitivo della band nel gennaio del 1990, in prossimità della partenza per un tour Europeo a supporto/promozione del nuovo materiale inciso.
Nel 1991 l’etichetta LM RECORDS pubblica la compilation “ITALY 1991 - A PORTRAIT OF NEW UNSIGNED TALENTS FROM ITALY”, dove come brano di apertura troviamo “A WOMAN LIKE YOU”.
L’album viene successivamente rimasterizzato c/o lo Zero Crossing Studio di Mozzo (Bg) di SIMONE PRADIN e pubblicato (in versione cd) nell’estate del 2009 dalla NEW LM RECORDS con l’aggiunta di 5 bonus tracks prese dalle demo session di “LETHAL TO WEAK ONES”, al quale poi ha fatto seguito nel 2010 la pubblicazione in formato cd dell’edizione remastered dell’omonimo primo album (pubblicato in origine nelle sole versioni L.p. e Musicassetta) con l’aggiunta di alcune bonus tracks prese dal demo d’esordio della band.
Nel gennaio 2019 il gruppo viene rifondato dal chitarrista MARCO VETTURI e a partire da dicembre 2019 riprende di nuovo l’attivita’ live, esibendosi con una nuova formazione nei principali locali di musica Metal della Lombardia, nonostante tutte le difficoltà del periodo 2020-2021 legate alla pandemia.
Nel gennaio 2022 inizia il lavoro di stesura dei nuovi brani che andranno a comporre il futuro terzo album della band: SCARED TO DEATH, WE DON’T CARE, NOTHING IS FOREVER, INTOXICATION, OBSESSION (Part.III) e IN MY HEART, ai quali si aggiungeranno le nuove versioni riarrangiate di FINAL REVENGE, BLOODY BONES e POWERS OF HELL. Dopo una lunga serie di vicissitudini e cambi di formazione, la line-up vede MARCO “Bruco” FERRI alla voce, MARCO VETTURI e ALESSANDRO DEPONTI (ex REBORN/REST IN PAIN) alle chitarre, il rientro di GERMANO MINUTI al basso e MARCO BOTTAZZI alla batteria.
Il 29 marzo 2024 è stato pubblicato sulle principali piattaforme digitali il primo singolo “WE DON’T CARE” su etichetta NEW LM RECORDS. Il testo del brano è stato scritto da CHIARA DeECAPITANI e vede la partecipazione di ANTONIO “Tone” SOLIVARI (storico fonico live della band) come special guest alla chitarra solista.
Il 12 settembre 2024 è stato rilasciato il secondo singolo SCARED TO DEATH (l’autrice del testo è sempre CHIARA DE CAPITANI).
A fine anno 2024, per festeggiare il 35° anniversario, è stato ristampato dalla rediviva LM RECORDS il secondo album NO TRACE OF SANITY (tiratura limitata di 300 copie numerate a mano - vinile trasparente).
DRUNKARDS: BIOGRAPHY
Formed in January 1985, the band kept the lineup unchanged until the winter of 1990, with GIANCARLO “Jun” CARMINATI (vocal and guitar) MARCO VETTURI (guitar) GERMANO MINUTI (bass guitar) and ANDREA VETTURI (drums).
In 1985, after a series of local concerts, the band published the debut demotape “DRUNKARDS”. The tracklist included: MARCH TO FIGHT (intro), BLOODY BONES, DON’T YOU PLAY WITH THE POWERS OF HELL, FINAL REVENGE, LOST AND LONELY, 5 MINUTES OF LIFE, AND THE DEWS OF NIGHT ARISE (instrumental – piano solo).
The group participated in the selections of the contest “SIM – viva i giovani”, held in Milan, from September 5 to 9, 1985, organized at the Music and High Fidelity International Fair; landing at the final (among the 20 finalist groups we also find LIPSTICK) on the November 11th 1985 in Milan at the Manzoni Theater, filmed and broadcast by the Italian Rai 3 and reviewed by the national newspaper “Il Corriere della sera” (November 14, 1985).
The year 1986 saw the group engaged in intense live activity, among the most important concerts was the participation on March 1st, 1986 at the “Dangerous meeting” festival in Pantigliate (MI), together with EXTREMA, MOON OF STEEL, EVIL FORCE, HELL KNIGHT and WITNESS, and on September the 22nd 1986 at the “Heavy Metal Night” in Sorisole (BG), together with R.A.F. (ROYAL AIR FORCE), SKANNERS and TOUCH OF DEVIL.
In December 1986 the band returned to the studio to record the new demo “LETHAL TO WEAK ONES”, which consists of the following tracks: CAPTIVE OF MY VICE, DON’T YOU PLAY WITH THE POWERS OF HELL, PIRANA (instrumental), LOST AND LONELY, TROOPER OF DEATH, BLOODY BONES, METAL FURY BROKE FREE, BRAINLESS, FINAL REVENGE. The tape received good acclaim (despite a not yet the professional production) and arrived in the hands of the discographer LUIGI MAZZESI, owner of the historic label LM RECORDS (for which have recorded, among others, STRANA OFFICINA, MORGANA, SABOTAGE, CRYING STEEL, REX INFERI, FLIGHT CHARM etc.).
In December 1987, the band signed a contract with LM RECORDS for the participation in the successful compilation “HEAVY RENDEZ-VOUS”, along with NAPALM, ADRAMELCH, MOON OF STEEL, CREEPIN’ DEATH, MASTERSTROKE, M.A.C.E. and BLACKBURN. The chosen track for DRUNKARDS was “TROOPER OF DEATH”, which for the occasion was professionally re-recorded in Florence at the “Much More Music Studio” of BERNARDO BALDASSARRI (with the collaboration of ANDREA CORSELLINI, nowadays VASCO ROSSI’s sound engineer).
Later on, the band returned to the Much More Music Studio in Florence to record 5 more tracks (LOOKING FOR TROUBLES, OBSESSION, HUMAN VIVISECTION, NUCLEAR SOLUTION and CAPTIVE OF MY VICE), and meant to release a mini-L.p.. Meanwhile, the band signed a contract with the KLAUS BYRON’s Musical Box Promotion, to promote the advance-tape on a national scale, obtaining comforting feedback from radio stations and specialized magazines.
LM RECORDS proposed the release of an entire Long Playing. The deal was sealed, and the band returned to the recording studio for the realization of two more tracks: LOST AND LONELY and the new DON’T SEARCH FOR THE ANSWER.
1988 saw the release by the LM RECORDS label of the compilation “HEAVY RENDEZ-VOUS” and the eponymous debut album. Both records got positive feedback from the specialized press (the H.M. magazine, Metal Shock and other fanzines) and industry insiders.
The live activity continued with a series of tour dates throughout Italy (at the historic venue “Sorpasso” in Milan, as special guests in the date of the SKANNERS tour in Imola, two times in Turin, at the “Topsy” in Livorno, “Pussycat” in Viserbella etc.).
Meanwhile, the group worked on the composition of the tracks for the second album and in the summer of 1989 entered the recording studio again (Koala Studio in Senigallia – Ancona) bringing with them the sound engineer BERNARDO BALDASSARRI (former guitarist of MASTERSTROKE), by now considered the fifth element of the band. The recordings were completed in autumn of the same year and the work consisted of the following tracks: 44151, SAY GOODBYE, GONNA DO IT MY WAY, UMMO WEH DINNAH (voices only), DISARRAY, A WOMAN LIKE YOU, OBSESSION (Part II), THE ABSURD TALE OF GOD, TONIGHT. This album represented a great step forward from the previous album, both in terms of production and sound impact, having been able to take advantage of a well-equipped recording studio. Just as the first album, the compositions ranged widely and were mainly affected by METALLICA, ANTHRAX, SLAYER, EXODUS, MEGADETH, MERCYFUL FATE and BLACK SABBATH.
Unfortunately, due to a series of circumstances unrelated to the band, the release of the second album “NO TRACE OF SANITY” was severely delayed and the disappointment over the failed publication led to the final dissolution of the band in January 1990.
In 1991, the LM Records label released the compilation “ITALY 1991 - PORTRAIT OF NEW UNSIGNED TALENTS FROM ITALY”, where the opening track was “A WOMAN LIKE YOU”, taken from “NO TRACE OF SANITY”.
The album was later remastered at the Zero Crossing Studio of Mozzo (BG), by SIMONE PRADIN, and released in CD version in the summer of 2009, by NEW LM RECORDS, with the addition of 5 new bonus tracks, taken from the demo sessions of “LETHAL TO WEAK ONES”, which was then followed by the cd format release of the remastered edition of the eponymous debut album (originally released in L.p. and M.c. versions only), with the addition of some bonus tracks taken from the band’s debut demo.
In January 2019 the band was refounded by guitarist MARCO VETTURI, and as of December 2019 it started again the live activity, performing with the new lineup, in the main metal music venues in Lombardy, despite all the difficulties of the 2020-2021 period, related to the pandemic.
In January 2022, the band began the work of writing new songs that will go to compose the band’s future third album: SCARED TO DEATH, WE DON’T CARE, NOTHING IS FOREVER, INTOXICATION, OBSESSION (Part III) and IN MY HEART, which will be joined by new versions of FINAL REVENGE, BLOODY BONES and POWERS OF HELL. After a long series of vicissitudes and formation changes, in March 2023 the lineup saw MARCO “Bruco” FERRI on vocals, MARCO VETTURI and ALESSANDRO DEPONTI (formerly REBORN/REST IN PAIN) on guitars, the return of GERMANO MINUTI on bass guitar and MARCO BOTTAZZI on drums.
The 29th March 2024 saw the release of the first single “WE DON’T CARE” on the label NEW LM RECORDS. The lyrics of the song were written by CHIARA DE CAPITANI, and it features the participation of ANTONIO “Tone” SOLIVARI (historic live sound engineer of the band) as special guest on lead guitar.
The 12th September 2024 saw the release of the second single “SCARED TO DEATH” (lyrics by CHIARA DE CAPITANI).
At the end of 2024, to celebrate the 35th anniversary, the second album “NO TRACE OF SANITY” was reissued by the revived LM RECORDS (limited edition of 300 hand-numbered copies on clear vinyl).
